Learn more about our places in Cyberspace below.
SciCentr uses online multi-user
virtual worlds, an Internet technology
that emerged from gaming and chat, for informal science and technology
outreach. We link teens online with college students, scientists, and
professionals. Users log in, become virtual beings (avatars) and
explore our virtual spaces together in collaborative, constructivist
activities. Content in the online museum, SciCentr includes galleries,
interactive exhibits and labs Youth in our SciFair programs help us open
the door to next generation technology and research.
SciCentr also maintains a number of
Web-based exhibits that aim to teach
about a variety of scientific topics, from earthquakes modeling to
controlling deadly pathogens. They present a combination of Web-based
games, customized database interfaces, and more straightforward
research descriptions presented in a student-friendly way. Our Web
exhibits section also features the online science book
Explorations, an interactive journey into the world of
computational research that is designed to interest a wide
range of viewers.
Related SciCentr Programs
extend to explorations of new media for STEM education, and especially
efforts to enhance the bridge from middle and high school to college for
all students. Activities range from special workshops to participation in
research projects at Cornell, especially those within the Computing and
Information Sciences Initiative.
